Here’s a small sample of all the great projects I’ve had the pleasure of working on this past year. Enjoy!

Each year, hundreds of high-performance vehicles descend on the scenic Atlantic coast of Canada in a celebration of speed called Targa Newfoundland. This year, I was asked by Warwick Paterson of Formula Photographic to accompany him to film and produce daily videos as three factory-backed SRT vehicles join a diverse field of international competitors eager to test their vehicles’ technical limits. The tenth-annual Targa presents SRT with the perfect opportunity to prove both the longevity of Pirelli tires and Pennzoil Ultra engine oil destined for factory use in the next-generation Dodge Viper SRT10, as well as the generosity of the SRT fan base at large.

A few weeks ago, I took my new brain bucket (Bell Custom 500 Helmet) to my friend Myk Roc for some pin-striping. Before heading out the door, I decided to bring along my camera with the sole intent of shooting a few pics of Myk doing what he does best. I hadn’t put much thought into what I was going to do with the photos, but over the past few years, I’ve learned to honor my instincts and felt that it was a good idea to have it with me just in case. After chewing the fat for a bit and getting caught up, we brainstormed some ideas about the design. The guidelines were simple. I wanted it to be a Mohawk of sorts, and incorporate army green, black and white. I also wanted him to include an artist rendition of someone flipping the bird on the back.

After this, I suddenly realized that filming the process would be a good idea and I quickly set up my camera to capture Myk while he prepped to paint my helmet; complete with an impromptu kitty stretch. So rad! I filmed the entire process, which to my surprise only took roughly an hour and a half. Myk’s garage is chalk full of hot-rods, custom motorcycles, helmets, skateboards and other incredible artifacts of each. Needless to say and as you’ll see in the video, there was no shortage of incredible visuals.

During the process, Myk and I chatted about many things, but mainly we talked about skateboarding and our individual experiences of being skateboarders over 30, and growing up skating in the 80′s. It was an amazing rap session and of course, despite growing up on opposite sides of the country, we shared common stories about being chased by the police, harassed by Joe public, musical tastes, favorite skaters and board graphics, and our ongoing passion to skate.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR/MOTION GRAPHICS/EDITOR
2011. Subaru Rally USA
10 minutes: WEB and Theater at XGAMES

This was an incredible project to be part of. With very little guidance and a ton of footage from rallies over the last few seasons, I was asked to edit a short film for Subaru entitled “Going for Gold.” In this film, the Subaru Rally Team USA takes you behind the scenes of their rise to the 2011 Rally America Championship. I had the pleasure of working with some incredible footage, shot by a my friend and extremely talented filmer, Warwick Patterson from Formula Photo.

Overall, this was one of the most intensely edited and render heavy projects I have ever been part of. I am extremely please (and proud) of how it turned out. Big props also go out to the Magic Bullet Looks and Twixtor plugins. They definitely helped us achieve the stylized look and feel of the film and helped to knock it out of the park!

2011. City of Richmond
3 minutes: WEB

Our challenge: To document, motivate, and engage Richmond staff and the public at-large about the City of Richmond Engineering Department’s, which is currently delivering on multiple Capital Projects. I have been brought on board as the DOP, Motion Graphics Artist and Editor. Together with SHAKA Productions, we are working closely with allocated Richmond staff to develop the look, feel, and ultimate delivery of the video series as a whole and each discrete video. Since its ultimate destination will likely be the web, the proposal was based on a short ‘webisode’ format and the video above is the fist of the series. There are four key elements that we capture and synthesize: video footage of the sites, work being done on these sites, interviews with key Engineering personnel, and B-roll.

2011. Folk Skateboards

I’m currently working on a short video with Andy “The Scot,” owner and master board-shaper at Folk Skateboards.  It will focus on the manufacturing process and both Andy’s inspiration and motivation for starting Folk Skateboards.

This February, I was asked to help direct and shoot a lifestyle video for the new Fairmont Hot Springs Resort & Spa. Vancouver-based integrated marketing communications agency Hotomali, contacted us about the project, and though we didn’t have a lot of time, the footage turned out great and the spot looks fantastic!
