Here is a small collection of some of the projects I have completed over the past year. I have been fortunate enough to be part of so many incredibly projects and picking which make it into my demo reel is not easy. However, I am extremely proud of all my work and honored to have worked along side and for a number of great people. I am definitely looking forward to what 2012 has in store.

2011. Myk Roc
2.25 minutes: WEB
A few weeks ago, I took my new brain bucket (Bell Custom 500 Helmet) to my friend Myk Roc for some pin-striping. Before heading out the door, I decided to bring along my camera with the sole intent of shooting a few pics of Myk doing what he does best. I hadn’t put much thought into what I was going to do with the photos, but over the past few years, I’ve learned to honor my instincts and felt that it was a good idea to have it with me just in case. After chewing the fat for a bit and getting caught up, we brainstormed some ideas about the design. The guidelines were simple. I wanted it to be a Mohawk of sorts, and incorporate army green, black and white. I also wanted him to include an artist rendition of someone flipping the bird on the back.
After this, I suddenly realized that filming the process would be a good idea and I quickly set up my camera to capture Myk while he prepped to paint my helmet; complete with an impromptu kitty stretch. So rad! I filmed the entire process, which to my surprise only took roughly an hour and a half. Myk’s garage is chalk full of hot-rods, custom motorcycles, helmets, skateboards and other incredible artifacts of each. Needless to say and as you’ll see in the video, there was no shortage of incredible visuals.
During the process, Myk and I chatted about many things, but mainly we talked about skateboarding and our individual experiences of being skateboarders over 30, and growing up skating in the 80′s. It was an amazing rap session and of course, despite growing up on opposite sides of the country, we shared common stories about being chased by the police, harassed by Joe public, musical tastes, favorite skaters and board graphics, and our ongoing passion to skate.

2010. Marwencol
1 x 1 minutes: KNOWLEDGE NETWORK
This was an incredible documentary and I was stoked to produce a promo for it on the Knowledge Network. After being beaten into a brain-damaging coma by five men outside a bar, Mark builds a 1/6th scale World War II-era town in his backyard. Mark populates the town he dubs “Marwencol” with dolls representing his friends and family and creates life-like photographs detailing the town’s many relationships and dramas. Playing in the town and photographing the action helps Mark to recover his hand-eye coordination and deal with the psychic wounds of the attack.

2010. Kensington Nights
1 x 4 minutes: Personal Interest
A few weeks ago, local skateboarding legend, Wee Wong told us that he was taking his generator and a few sets of lights to the Kensington Skateboard Park for a night session. I had a hunch that the bowl was going to look amazing at night and I was not disappointed. Filmed by George Faulkner and myself on a Canon 5D, T2i and with a little help from a Glidetrack, the footage turned out better then I had expected. Editing the short video – that captured the energy and overall vibe of the evening – proved to be rather easy. The hard part was deciding what the best shots were, because all of the footage was superb. I am stoked on how it turned out and special thanks to Concrete Skateboard Magazine for posting it on their website.

2009. Museum of Anthropology
1 x 15 seconds: CBC / CTV
To date, this has to be one of my most favorite projects. For many reasons, this commercial is one that I am very proud of and is a testament to the importance of pre-production. Before I ever turned on a camera, I had an exact visual storyboard timed to the second, which enabed me to be incredibly accurate with regards to how much footage I actually needed, as well as key framing and transitions between shots. Each graphical element was was pre-made and laid out in Illustrator/Photoshop allowing us to significantly streamline the work flow in After Effects. When I think back to the editing process, it went so well, it actually felt like we were painting by numbers. Everything step of this production went incredibly smooth, and in the end, the client was very very happy. So was I.
DIRECTOR – WEST COAST UNIT
2009. I Work ACTRA
1 x 4 minutes: web
This video was produced out of Toronto, by my good friend David Fernandez and his production company, Leslieville Productions. As David was unable to come out to Vancouver to do the interviews himself, he asked me if I’d be able to help direct a shoot with prominent Canadian actors, located on the west coast. Of course I was thrilled to help out and instantly agreed. It was a tricky shoot, as we had to match the look and feel of the shoot in Toronto. Detailed diagrams were sent to assist us with the lighting and from the final product, I think we pulled it off without a hitch. The day of the shoot was great. I had a blast meeting all of the actors and everyone was very welcoming and extremely easy to direct. It was my first experience working with the RED camera and I was impressed with the final edit. Good job Dave and thanks for the opportunity!

2010. World of Islam
1 x 1 minutes: KNOWLEDGE NETWORK
This is the latest promo I completed for KNOWLEDGE. Because of all the negative publicity that Islam has been getting in the press, the goal of this project was quite simple: showcase the diversity and positive sides of Islam. I learnt so much about the Muslim culture watching all the documentaries that are included in this promo. Art, science, architecture, music, culture, history, literature, medicine, and the list goes on! I never knew how much of what we know today about science and technology, has evolved because of its inception by Muslim culture. Do yourself a favor and learn more about this beautiful religion. I’m grateful to have had a chance to do this project.

2010. Die Fruitfly
1 x 1.5 minutes: Personal Interest
This was a little film I put together on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Our studio had become overrun with fruit flies, so I went out and purchased Fly Tape. After strategically placing these sticky contraptions throughout the studio, I noticed one in particular that the flies we going to in droves. It struck me that it might look rad if I filmed the little buggers meeting their maker with a macro lens. I think I was spot on with that assumption. I can’t get over how amazing the footage turned out. In the last clip, you can almost hear the little rascal crying out in frustration. I know, it’s a bit sadomasochist, but it’s all in the name of art. Right?

2010. Murderball
1 x 1 minutes: KNOWLEDGE NETWORK
I can’t say enough about this documentary. It made me laugh, it made me cry. It was a roller-coaster of emotions and an incredible testament to the strength of the human spirit. It was both heartbreaking and inspirational. I am so grateful to have had a chance to produce this promo for such an extraordinary film. If you ask me, all of the individuals in this film are true heroes. Excellent film. A must see.

2010. Oliver Schroer: Silence at the Heart of Things
1 x 1 minutes: KNOWLEDGE NETWORK
I can’t believe how incredibly difficult it is, at times, to produce these promos. Trying to pick the best clips and sound bites from a film that is filled to the brim with inspirational and extremely powerful moments is a daunting task. However, in only 45 seconds, I think the viewer will get an idea about Oliver’s story and the many lives he touched will on his galactic journey. I have never been much of a fiddle connoisseur, but I’m gonna definitely get a few of Oliver’s albums as soon as I can. Another great Canadian taken from us much too early.

2010. Above all Gutters/Coastlines Creative
1 x 2 minutes: Web
This short video for Above All Gutters was a great project and I am extremely happy with how the footage and edit turned out. Using a mix of sequential photographs in some sections, Glitetrack shots, and an array of lenses really helped to improve the overall all production quality. It was a very long day of shooting and I can’t thank Jordan Junck, from ‘Jordan Junck Photography’ for his assistance throughout the day, especially when he had to hold me by the belt as I dangled precariously on the roof.

2010. Millenials – Networking Change
1 x 2.5 minutes: Web / Trailer
This was a very challenging project for presentation at the TIFF. After going through hours and hours of interview footage, I experimented with different concepts and design, and then did my best to create something that was not only compelling and relevant, but also visually stimulating. I think the end product is pretty decent.

2008. British Columbia Innovation Council
1 x 1.5 minutes: web
This project was great. I was the Director/Creative Director so I was given a lot of freedom to come up with the concept and overall style. I hired an incredibly talented animator who just happened to be one of my close friends, Ken Meyer. It was a rad working with him, as he interpreted what I “saw” in my minds eye and translated it with ease. That is something many have tried, but only a few have succeeded in doing. Ken really helped keep this project on schedule and most importantly, on budget. I owe the success of this project to his hard work and dedication and would recommend him to anyone looking for a talented 3D Animator.

1 x 4.5 minutes: web
This is a compilation of footage that I shot (hand held of course) while visiting my dear friend, Jenn Nemis, at her B&B in Ucluelet, BC. I can’t even begin to describe how stunningly beautiful it is there. I was out venturing on the rocks with camera in hand, hoping to snap a few photos. Little did I know what was in store for me. Thankfully, I had a macro lens with me. However, filming with such a lens and being without a tripod has it’s drawbacks. Nonetheless, I think it actually adds to the rugged and rawness of the experience. And come on, starfish holding hands! Who would have thunk it! Mother Nature, how I love you so!

2010. Cracker II
1 x 1 minutes: KNOWLEDGE NETWORK
This is a Promo for the multi-award winning and critically acclaimed detective drama series starring Robbie Coltrane, as the wise-cracking Fitz, a brilliant but flawed criminal psychologist with a remarkable insight into the criminal mind. There were so many classic come-backs and sarcastic remarks, picking my favorites was challenging, though I think the promo has a good flow and introduces the viewer to some of the main characters more “colourful” idiosyncrasies.

2010. Horizons West
1 x 2 minutes: web
While visiting my dear friend Jenn, at her B&B in Ucluelete, BC, I decided to do a bit of filming around her beautiful property and surprise her with a little promotional video. I wanted the interior of the house to speak for itself, so I kept the camera moves very basic. However, as you will notice, I did use a Glidetrack system for the dolly shots. It turned out pretty good and I think it’s safe to say that Jenn and her brother Rich loved it!
“Horizon’s West B&B is located on the west coast of Vancouver Island in the glorious township of Ucluelet BC, were the magnificient rugged coastlines meet the huge expanses of sandy beaches, and the beauty of nature dazzles the senses.”

2010. Uranium One / Coastlines Creative
1 x 2 minutes: web
Though this animation was completed earlier this year, I just uploaded it today. It was a great project that involved taking illustration and separating them in foreground, mid-ground, and background elements,. Each of these were then animated separately in After Effects to create an animated comic book feel. I also incorporated a few 3D animations to the work flow and getting the textures to match the illustrations was no easy task. However, we pulled it off and I think it integrated rather seamlessly. It came together rather well and gave me some ideas for projects in the future.

2010. AMEX / Whistler Film Festival
1 x 2 minutes: web / CTV
This is an animation I did for the Whistler Film Festival a few years ago using Motion. It was pretty straight forward and the only challenge I encountered was finding a “snow” that that client liked and getting it to completely cover the graphic elements. Short and sweet.

2010. Telus / Blink Media
1 x 2 minutes: web
This project was a pretty straight forward edit for Blink Media Works. They had a rather tight deadline and needed a solid cut in less than 3 days. With the exception of a few week shots in the beginning, this project turned out nice and the client had only a few revisions. I love it when that happens.
